It is my desire to find a way of being in this world that illuminates others. Because illumination is a concept that can reveal itself in many ways, I focus my investigation by painting my surroundings when they’re lit by natural light. The interplay of light and shadow can ignite the most ordinary setting, revealing an inherent beauty. This effect of the light, rather than its source, is what I’m interested in exploring.

But not only do I paint my sunlit surroundings, I enjoy being influenced by the presiding spirit of a place. For example, while traveling in Italy I noticed countless objects of devotion lurking everywhere. I realized that the light of a holy icon has nothing to do with natural light, its light appears to come from within. I aspire to bring this mysterious quality of light to my work.
